Gift Ideas for Seniors - Make Your Gift Personal

Posted by JE Jones on Aug-18-2010

You may have several senior citizens on your gift list and you want something special for Grandma or Great aunt Mary. Gift ideas for seniors can be challenging to come up with but the best idea is to make your gift personal. Does your elderly relative or friend have health issues or are they living in an assisted living setting? Even if they are living on their own, most seniors want a gift they can actually use and which shows some special thought.

Here are some gift ideas for seniors to get you started:

  • Photo frames with family photos – While most seniors no longer want knick knacks sitting around, they will love a nice framed picture. Consider a new digital photo frame. This Pandigital PAN7000DW 7-Inch Digital Picture Frame is a mid-priced gift and you can personalize it by adding a file of family photos.
  • Deliver a holiday meal if you live close enough. If you don’t, and your gift recipient does their own cooking, consider something like this New England Breakfast Gift Basket
  • Holiday decorations - Make this idea even better by giving some of your own time to put them up!
  • Plan a special outing with your senior relative. Take them to lunch with the family, to a movie or maybe to do some holiday shopping.
  • Run errands for them. If the elderly person you know lives at home, offer to mow the lawn, cook a meal or go get groceries for them. If they live in assisted living, you can still offer to bring in special food, do some laundry or ask them what they need.
  • Candy you ate as a kid® Wax Lips, Candy Buttons, Wax Bottles, Candy Cigarettes and more fresh candies from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. This retro candy will bring back great memories for seniors on your gift list.
  • Large print books or audio books. Make sure they have a device to play the books if you get audio.
  • Warm blankets, afghans, slippers and robes are always appreciated.
  • DVD’s or videos of old movies or TV shows

Remember for many seniors on your gift list, the gift of time is the most appreciated. Either the time you spent choosing that special gift or time spent with them.  Think about them, what they like to do, listen to their memories. What old TV shows or radio shows did they love? What foods are their favorites? Is there any special restaurant they’d like to eat at or movie they’d like to see? The greatest gift idea for seniors is knowing you put a lot of thought into choosing just the perfect thing for them.

Save Big Money with Groupon.com - Sign up is free

Posted by JE Jones on Jul-26-2010

I recently discovered Groupon and it’s a great way to save money on restaurants, entertainment, spa treatments and more. How does Groupon work? You sign up for free for the city or cities of your choice and then each day one business offers a special deal which saves you anywhere from 50% to 90% for dinners, yoga classes, massages, bowling, or just about any service or business you can imagine. The deal is emailed directly to you each day.

If you want the Groupon deal, you can purchase a printable coupon and off you go.

The idea behind Groupon is that if lots of people group together and take a deal, it makes it worthwhile for the business to offer it.

Groupon.com is not specifically a senior discount site but it sure helps seniors stretch their dollars. Yesterday I bought a Groupon certificate for a local restaurant. The deal was $25 worth for $12. So the next time we visit Habenaro’s Mexican Restaurant, our first $25 is already paid for with more than a 50% discount.

The only drawback to Groupon is that you have to live near a major city but more cities are being offered all the time. Plus, think of Groupon next time you travel. You always have several months to use the deal after you buy it. You can also buy Groupon coupons to give as gift certificates so if you have a friend or relative in a major city, sign up for their city and view the deals!

Visit Groupon today and save.

something nostalgic about the chimes of a grandfather clock marking the hour. I’ve always been interested in the history of clocks. You can find more great information about clocks on clocks blog which carries not only Quality grandfather clocks, but grandmother clocks.

Nostalgic Christmas Movies - Scrooge 1935

Posted by JE Jones on Dec-2-2009

I love old time, nostalgic movies and the 1935 version of the Christmas Classic, Scrooge, is as nostalgic as they come. Scrooge is based on the classic Charles Dicken’s novel, “A Christmas Carol” written in 1843 and published in December of that year. This 1935 movie, starring Seymour Hicks as the miserly Mr. Scrooge, and Donald Calthrop as the meek and mild Bob Cratchit, is available to watch free on Retrovision TV.

The 1935 version of Scrooge most closely resembles the Dickens story and somehow the dark and dreary “baa humbug” atmosphere of Mr. Scrooge’s story really comes across by watching it in stark black and white.

There are lots of newer versions of Scrooge around but the 1935 Scrooge will always be my favorite.

DVD’s of classic holiday movies make a wonderful Christmas gift, especially for the seniors in your life. This time of the year, I always love seeing holiday movies and two of my all time favorite old time holiday movies are White Christmas starring Bing Crosby and Christmas in Connecticut, starring Barbara Stanwick. These are a must see on my list each year. I gave copies to my mom one year and I know she watched them each December too.

One gift basket idea I especially loved was the Healthy Choice Baskets. These are filled with healthy items like Stash Premium Green Tea, mixed nuts, dried fruits, sugar free preserves and delicious sounding East Shore Key Lime with Ginger Mustard.

Elegant Watches -A Great Gift for Anyone on Your List

Posted by JE Jones on Nov-20-2009

My husband needs a new watch this holiday season and I liked the selection at BlueDial.com. They carry all

ESQ Aerodyne Digital watch

ESQ Aerodyne Digital watch

the popular quality brands of wrist watches at discount prices. All watches also include free 2-day shipping, which is great for holiday gift giving. If you’re looking for gift ideas for just about anyone on your list, a watch may be the perfect thing.

One watch that caught my eye was this Men’s Aerodyne Digital watch with an alarm and 24 hour city world time. It looks very elegant and the savings on it are a bonus. My husband definitely needs a watch with an alarm because he always takes a 15 minute nap on his lunch break from work and he can’t be oversleep - much as he’s like to sometimes.

A citizen diamond watch would make a beautiful gift for our daughter, who is also graduating college just before Christmas. It’s taken her five years to get her architecture degree and an elegant diamond watch would make a memorable gift to mark such a special occasion.

In fact, a Seiko, Gucci or Citizen watch would make a wonderful gift for just about any occasion - that special anniversary, Christmas or a birthday. BlueDial.com carries these brands plus, Breitling, Bulova, Swiss Army, Cartier and many more - all at great discount prices.

Before you decide on a gift for that special occasion, check out BlueDial.com.

There is something about old family recipes that can evoke the holiday spirit like nothing else. My mom gave me an Iowa Farm Bureau cookbook published in the 1920’s (the front cover has been missing for years!) and the historic country recipes have always been a part of my family’s holiday. One especially nostalgic recipe my mom always made is this mock minced meat recipe.

One reason I love fixing mince meat for the holidays is that you don’t often see it anymore. I give it as a gift to seniors I know who appreciate a reminder of their own childhood holidays.

Old recipes are always short on directions as most cooks back then didn’t need them, I guess.

Mock Minced Meat Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup cold water
1-2 cups molasses
1-2 cups sugar
1-2 cups vinegar
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp cinnamon
2-3 cups butter
1 cup raisins
1-2 cups fine crackers
1 egg
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp salt (optional)

Directions

Although the ingredients are as listed above, I chose to use about 1 and 1/2 cups of all the ingredients that say 1-2 cups.

Cook raisins in cold water. Add sugar, molasses, vinegar and then other ingredients.

Mix well and pour into a prepared baked crust.

If you put this in a 9×12 inch pan, you can cut it into squares.
