My mother has had a beautiful grandfather clock in her entry way ever since I was a child. There’s

something nostalgic about the chimes of a grandfather clock marking the hour. I’ve always been interested in the history of clocks. One famous clock maker, Dent and Company, has been producing beautiful clocks for three centuries in Great Britain. Started in 1814 by the first Edward J Dent, Dent and Company made the famous Tower Clock in London’s House of Parliament, known as Big Ben.

You can find more great information about clocks on clocks blog which carries not only Quality grandfather clocks, but grandmother clocks.

I love watching old TV shows and especially the holiday editions. Old shows didn’t used to routinely put out Christmas episodes like they do now so it’s terrific to see Ozzie and Harriet Christmas or Father Knows Best Christmas. You can watch these holiday episodes free on the internet on Retrovision.tv

Last year I subscribed to Retrovision’s newsletter and they send me emails with new shows they’ve added to their free viewing. Here are some nostalgic holiday episodes available:

Bob Hope Christmas in Korea from 1955 Comedian Bob Hope was known for his visits overseas to US military personnel. Here’s an episode from one of his holiday visits.

Ozzie and Harriet Busy Christmas from 1956. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet aired from 1952 to 1966 and this family show starring the real life Nelson family are often held up as the perfect family standards from the 1950’s. I watched this one nostalgic episode this morning and it was great! It’s very strange to see families talking about putting up lights and getting a tree just a few days before Christmas.

Lou Grant Christmas from 1978 - Ed Asner starred in the Lou Grant show, an off shoot of the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

A Sweathog Christmas from 1975 - This comedy starred Gab Kaplan as a high school teacher and it’s where John Travolta got his start!

Three Beverly Hillbillies Christmas Shows. These aired from 1962 to 1964. The Beverly Hillbillies, starring Buddy Epsen, aired from 1962 to 1971.

Daniel Boone, A Christmas Story - Daniel Boone, starring Fess Parker aired from 1964 to 1970.

Check out Retrovision.tv for more nostalgic Christmas TV shows and movies, like Jetson’s Christmas, Father Knows Best, Alf and lots more. Fun for the whole family.

Nostalgic Christmas Movies - Scrooge 1935

Posted by JE Jones on Dec-2-2009

I love old time, nostalgic movies and the 1935 version of the Christmas Classic, Scrooge, is as nostalgic as they come. Scrooge is based on the classic Charles Dicken’s novel, “A Christmas Carol” written in 1843 and published in December of that year. This 1935 movie, starring Seymour Hicks as the miserly Mr. Scrooge, and Donald Calthrop as the meek and mild Bob Cratchit, is available to watch free on Retrovision TV.

The 1935 version of Scrooge most closely resembles the Dickens story and somehow the dark and dreary “baa humbug” atmosphere of Mr. Scrooge’s story really comes across by watching it in stark black and white.

There are lots of newer versions of Scrooge around but the 1935 Scrooge will always be my favorite.

DVD’s of classic holiday movies make a wonderful Christmas gift, especially for the seniors in your life. This time of the year, I always love seeing holiday movies and two of my all time favorite old time holiday movies are White Christmas starring Bing Crosby and Christmas in Connecticut, starring Barbara Stanwick. These are a must see on my list each year. I gave copies to my mom one year and I know she watched them each December too.

Digestive Problems? You May Need Digestive Enzymes

Posted by JE Jones on Dec-1-2009

How do you know if you need a digestive enzymes? Your body needs digestive enzymes to help you absorb and assimilate all the nutrients you take in, either from eating healthy food or taking nutritional supplements. Our own bodies produce digestive enzymes but as we age, we produce less and less, meaning if we want to keep our weight, energy and digestion in good working order, we need to make a conscious effort to get these enzymes.

Do You Need Digestive Enzymes?

Do you find you can’t enjoy foods you once ate all the time, like lettuce and beans? If you suffer from indigestion and heartburn frequently, have IBS or other digestive problems, and especially if you are a baby boomer over age 50 (there’s a reason older people have more digestive problems), you probably do need digestive enzymes.

Do you also suffer from lack of energy or inflammation? Inflammation in the body causes many health issues, from asthma to joint pain to heart disease. If you suffer from any of these your body may be lacking in important enzymes which help break down the food you eat so that you get the most nutrients possible. When your body stops producing these important digestive enzymes, even if you eat a healthy diet, you won’t be absorbing the benefits, which only adds to your health problems.

Did you know that your immune system may also be suffering because it is expending it’s resources to complete the digestive process of the food in your blood stream? These days, with illnesses like H1N1 around, digestive enzymes are extremely important for building a healthy immune system.

One way to get digestive enzymes in your diet is to eat more raw foods or make green smoothies with them. Heating food over 115 degrees destroys the enzymes so if you aren’t getting lots of fresh fruits and veggies, raw nuts and other whole natural foods, you probably are lacking in digestive enzymes.

Green smoothies are one way break down food so it’s even more digestible. You throw any and all fruits and veggies into a Vitamix and blend into smoothie form. It’s a delicious way to get all the greens your body needs.

You can also eat fermented foods like yogurt or kefir daily to get enzymes. Kefir is easy to make at home, as is yogurt. All you need for kefir is a good starter and you can make quarts of kefir for very little money. I use Body Ecology kefir starter, which is a great product.

Digestive enzymes are great for pets too. I’ve been giving kefir, which contains natural digestive enzymes to my 9 year old Labrador retriever. She’s been slowing down and lacking energy and the digestive enzymes are helping her to break down her food and receive more nutrition.

Should you get digestive enzymes from supplements?

Supplements are a all right for getting your enzymes, except that many could sit on store shelves for months before you take them, rendering the digestive enzymes useless. Also, you don’t know how they are processed either. The best ones are probably those found in the refrigerator case.

Be sure to thoroughly research any digestive enzyme supplement you purchase to get the best quality you can afford. Since these can be pricey, you might be happier and healthier to get more enzymes from raw or fermented food sources.

Giving your body the best digestive enzymes will increase quality of life by improving energy and digestion, building a better immune system and even increasing longevity.
