It’s one thing to see conservative websites and commentators questioning Obama’s health care reform but when liberal outlets like CNN start questioning it, can the end be far behind? CNNMoney.com recently had a very good article on the health care reform issue and the freedoms you would lose under it - despite what promoters of the plan are telling us.

1.  You’d lose the freedom to choose your own plan.

2.  Freedom to be rewarded for healthy living, or pay your real costs

3.  Freedom to choose high deductible coverage.

4.  Freedom to keep your exisiting plan

5.  Freedom to choose your doctors.

CNNMoney.com’s article 5 Freedoms You’ll Lose in Health Care Reform

My husband and I are on Tricare because my husband is retired military. There are changes brewing in that plan and if the government takes over health care, those on Tricare would have no choice at all because it’s already a government plan and so it’s ripe for take over and overhaul without our having any say-so in the matter.

Tricare is a great example of what the government would like to see happening to all health care. We have limited access to doctors because many doctors don’t want to take the reduced amount that Tricare pays, plus, as we’ve been told, it’s a paperwork nightmare for doctors. So far, we’ve had a good experience because we are healthy and our visits to the doctor are mostly for physicals and routine matters. We also live in a larger area, however, where there is at least some choice in doctors who will accept Tricare.

It’s very important that each person in the US become educated on what is in the health care reform bill and decide if you agree or disagree - then let your Congressmen know! If doctors are forced to cut costs by a government mandate, how do you suppose they will do it and how will it compromise your care?

If the government is handling your health care, how long will it be before they are telling you what to eat (no more fast food! Not that I advocate fast food but it’s handly sometimes). Perhaps they will install a scale at the door of your local McDonalds and if your weight is over what it should be, you won’t be able to order. Perhaps they will just tax the heck out of all unhealthy foods so people can’t afford it, like they did with cigarettes.

On the flip side, they would also have to make healthy food more affordable for families. I’d be the first to admit that organic fruits and veggies, or fruits and veggies alone, are more expensive than mac and cheese and hot dogs. Speaking of hot dogs- they are terrifically unhealthy. If you eat them, maybe you shouldn’t get that heart bypass you need.

Lots to think about once the government is involved. They’ve done so well with education, social security and medicare, why not let them loose with our health care system too?

I still say if people are smart, they will take their health and wellness into their own hands so they won’t have a need for any of these plans, visits to the doctor, surgeries, etc. About 90% of your health is in your own hands. Keep your weight down, exercise, eat fruits and veggies and do some research on any health concerns you may have to see what natural alternatives there may be out there instead of relying on drugs and health care plans.

Joan’s Boomer Blog - More on the Yoga Experience

Posted by JE Jones on Jul-20-2009

I wrote in It’s Never too Late to Try Yoga about the importance of listening to your body when doing yoga. For baby boomers, this is especially important, as I found out  recently.

I’d been doing yoga for a couple months and I admit, being in a class, I strive to keep up with everyone, doing the stretches and bends. I was very proud of myself for being as good as most in the class. The instructor constantly tells us yoga is not about ego, it is about getting in tune to your own body. I guess I couls have listened a little better to that advice.

I’ve read that baby boomers are constantly injuring themselves, trying to do the same things with their bodies as they did when they were 30. They don’t slow down, they jog, they run, they bike, they forge ahead, thinking they can out-muscle approaching old age. I do think it’s true that the better shape you’re in, the more gracefully you will age, the fewer health problems you will have, especially problems with muscles and joints, but it’s also important not to over-do it and injure yourself. Recovery for injuries when you’re over 40 is much slower than it was at age 25.

About 10 days ago, I noticed a pain up the back of one leg that didn’t go away. When I did the forward bend, it got worse. I knew I’d pulled a muscle in my leg with the down dog. I was just another over zealous baby boomer, I discovered.

Not that I’m nearing 60, I guess it is time to back off and approach things like yoga in a more subdued manner. I’m not quitting, that’s for sure, but I am going to go easier on trying to keep up with the 20 year olds in the class.

What yoga has done for me in three months or so I’ve been doing it is to improve my balance, make me feel more graceful and slimmed my waistline. I had a pain in my elbow for several weeks due to working on the computer which has vanished with yoga. My wrists are stronger too. I would never have believed how much of a workout yoga is for your muscles!

Maybe it’s a good thing I’m learning to make a few concessions to my age. According to my 83-year-old mother, growing old gracefully is all about learning to be old, realizing you can’t do everything you did when you were 40, and being happy anyway with what you CAN do. It’s a good lesson for us boomers. There’s no reason you can’t do your down dogs but listen to your body and let it tell you when enough is enough.

If you’d like to try yoga at home, I started out with Rodney Yee’s DVD which you can preview below:

One thing I have learned about doing yoga, even as a baby boomer, the more often you do it, the more you can do. Even is you don’t over-exert yourself, you get better and better all the time.

Do you suffer from chronic pain or a serious illness or disease? I wanted to give an update on my experience with self healing using the Silva Method and other self-healing resources.

The Silva Method recordings really help you to understand fully the importance of taking care of your emotional health because of the direct effect it has, not only on your health, but on every aspect of your life.

Even signing up for the free Silva newsletter supplies you with many of the exercises and audios, including their famous Centering Exercise, which totally relaxes you and puts you into the alpha state quickly. The alpha state is where deep relaxation and healing takes place, where we can make suggestions to our very cells begin the healing process.

The Silva audios contain exercises and talks by Laura Silva which guide you toward self-healing but you can also use these exercises and information to solve any problem in your life, learn more quickly and easily, relax and get closer to your spiritual side and more. They are very relaxing too. I’ve been using a couple of them when I am falling asleep at night and I’ve never slept so well for so long a stretch before. Usually, I sleep really soundly for about 3-4 nights out of the week and the others are spent waking up frequently throughout the night.

I think what I like the most about the Silva Method for Self healing, however, is that the Silva approach to clearing is extremely accessible for anyone - and it really works to create profound emotional shifts. If you have studied the law of attraction, you know that creating a more joyous emotional expe4rience in life dictates our overall vibration, and thus what we can attract.

But if you’re a person dealing with health issues of any kind, you’ve got to at least explore this program. As I mentioned - and as you may know - this method has created powerful change in millions of people for many many years. The Silva website contains case studies which will boggle your mind in terms of the illnesses and conditions that have totally disappeared after people have used this approach to healing.

My personal story, in a nutshell, is this. I consider myself extremely healthy. I exercise several days a week, I do yoga, my diet is excellent. However, about 2 years ago, I began having a tingling sensation throughout my body, even into my mouth and face. Back then a neurologist could find no physical evidence of what was causing it. I’ve tried acupuncture - which helped while I was undergoing the treatments, chiropractics - which helped the tingling in my arms but not my legs, and just plain ignoring it - which didn’t work very well.

Louise Hay says we create illness and disease in our bodies for a reason, something in our lives we must pay attention to. The Law of Attraction books also says that we create illness and disease in our bodies through our negative thought patterns. Not that we ever think “I want to get cancer” but that a lifetime of negative, critical, unloving thoughts, take a toll on our very cells, creating dis-ease. If we don’t change our thoughts and create a more loving atmosphere for ourselves, our health deteriorates.

But, using programs like the Silva Method for Self-healing, we can learn to create good health and change our thoughts, taking control of our life and our thoughts.

I still listen to Louise Hay’s audio book Self-Healing too. She offers a 35 minute meditation for self-healing that is wonderful.

After I listen to any of these self-healing meditations, my tingling is less and I can truly feel the healing taking place. If you are suffering from any type of chronic pain, I couldn’t recommend either Louise Hay’s Self Healing or the Silva Method highly enough. Using these meditations, you can free yourself of chronic pain.

Food Budget Ideas - Make Your Own Greek Style Yogurt

Posted by JE Jones on Jul-14-2009

Save Money on Your Food Bill - It’s Easy to Make Greek Style Yogurt

Save money by learning to make your own Greek style yogurt at home. Greek style yogurt adds richness and extra nutrition to your dip and sauce recipes but it can also be expensive. Sometimes it’s also harder to find, available mainly in health food stores and specialty shops. Making your own costs just a fraction of what commercial Greek style yogurt costs, ensuring that you’ll always have some on hand.

What makes Greek style yogurt different?

All yogurt is made the same way, friendly bacteria is added to heated milk, which then thickens. The difference in Greek style yogurt is that it is strained, which separates the watery whey from the curd. This results in a thick, creamy yogurt with a more intense taste. The nutrients in Greek style yogurt are more concentrated because the liquid is strained out, so you get even more protein, calcium, magnesium and B vitamins in a serving than you get from regular yogurt.

You can also get more fat from Greek style yogurt, but it’s possible to make it in low fat or fat free versions as well.

How to Make Greek Style Yogurt

Purchase a 16 oz container of plain yogurt. I like to use organic yogurt for this. If you’d like fat free or low fat, purchase the plain yogurt in this form too.

Line a colindar with a couple layers of paper towel, some coffee filters OR cheese cloth.

Put colander over a larger bowl so the liquid can drain from the yogurt into the bowl.

Add yogurt to colander. Cover with plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator overnight.

The next morning discard the whey which has drained into the bowl. The yogurt left in the colander is Greek style yogurt, ready to add to recipes.

Here’s a great Greek yogurt dip recipe called Tzadziki. I lived in Greece for two years and this wonderfully rich dip was served at every taverna meal. I loved it so much that when I returned to the States, I used this recipe to I always have it on hand.

Tzadziki Greek yogurt dip is also good for the immune system as it contains friendly bacteria and fresh garlic. If you “feel a cold coming on,” make up some Tzadziki and eat it for quick relief.

Tzadziki Greek Yogurt Recipe

Ingredients

32 oz Greek style yogurt
1 large cucumber, peeled and diced
5 cloves garlic, minced
3 tbs white vinegar
1/4 c extra virgin olive oil
Salt to taste

Directions for Tzadziki Dip

Combine garlic and cucumber, draining as much excess liquid from them as possible.
In a large bowl, blend all ingredients until a thick mixture has formed.

Serve this Greek style dip with crackers, French bread or veggies. Also use in Greek recipes calling for Tzadziki.

Baby boomers should pay attention to the current health care reform bills being pushed by the Obama Administration. If this health care reform is passed, American seniors will end up like their Canadian counterparts:

  • Limited access to colonoscopies led to a 25% higher rate of colon cancer
  • 42% of Canadians die of colon cancer vs 31% of Americans who die of colon cancer - in part because of a ban on the use of the two best colon cancer chemotherapy treatments in Canada. Americans, who still have access to these drugs have less chance of dying of this disease.
  • The death rate from cancer in Canada is 16% higher overall than in the US.

As baby boomers and seniors in America, do we really want the same health care in America as the Canadians have? Do you want the government to decide if 80-year-old Aunt Sally gets a hip replacement or heart surgery? When you’re 80 years old and have health problems, the governement will look at you and say, “You’re OLD and a non-contributing member of society now. You will never be healthy again, You will never pay taxes again. The hip replacement (heart surgery, cancer surgery) money will go to the 45 year-old doctor or the 45 year old banker. Those people will recover and continue to contribute.”

If the current health care reform passes, I suggest you start looking for alternative remedies to your conditions and start reading books and listening to audios on self-healing because you will be on your own!

It’s amazing to me that baby boomers and seniors aren’t looking at this health care reform plan and screaming bloody murder. Your Medicare, which seniors and the elderly rely on now, will go away.

I recently overheard a conversation at the local YMCA where an older woman said “In the future, old people will just be done away with.” Many older people seem to believe this. Either that or the elderly will be warehoused in what passes for nursing homes.

Remember in teh 1980’s when all the mentally ill were turned out into the streets to fend for themselves due to Reagan’s government cut-backs on programs for them? They ended up homeless, living wherever they could, with no treatment of any sort for their illnesses.

Whether or not you’re a Republican or Democrat, Liberal or Conservative, you should pay attention to the health care reform situation. Whether or not you agree with Dick Morris, you owe it to yourself to read his column, Obama will Repeal Medicare.

Read how disapproval is mounting for Obama’s Plan

Personally, when it comes to doctors and health care, I’ve always done my own research and approached any health situation through meditation and self-healing. I’ve written many articles encouraging others to do the same. I guess it’s a good thing as in the future, as a senior in our society, I will be depending on the government to manage my health care decisions.

The number of people interested in self-healing and alternative remedies is growing by leaps and bounds every day. Perhaps these people instinctively know that soon they will only have themselves to rely on when it comes to health care.

Resources for Baby Boomers

Posted by JE Jones on Jul-7-2009

What’s new for baby boomers?

Here are some new resources for those in their boomer years. Although the website offers information for seniors, many baby boomers dislike that term. Many boomers are still working, taking classes and going to exercise classes so the term “seniors” makes them seem older than they feel. So far, I guess, the US government doesn’t really see us as baby boomers. Might want to talk to your Congressman about that!

Actually 1 in 7 seniors are still working.

USA.gov offers great information for seniors, baby boomers and their families. Resources include:

  • Consumer Protection for Seniors
  • Education, Jobs and Training for Seniors
  • Federal and State agencies for Seniors
  • Housing for Seniors
  • Money and Tax Information for Seniors
  • Caregiver Resources

The AARP is offering a new prescription drug resource to help people avoid the dreaded “doughnut hole” in their prescription drug coverage. That is the gap between what Medicare’s prescription drug program pays for and what it might actually cost seniors to get the drugs they need.

Here is the AARP Donut Hole Calculator. This site guides you through Medicare’s prescription drug options.

Did you know that 13% of the population is now over age 65? By the year 2050, the number of seniors in the US will reach nearly 89 million.

Senior Resources Guide.com -offers a network of local directories, organized by states, which focuses on senior resources and services. Find listings of housing, health, professional, care management and community resources, plus other senior news and other great information for baby boomers.
