Are You Nostalgic For the Old Days? Life in 2009

Life in 2009

Baby boomers are embracing new technology in droves. They love social networks and forums, have Facebook pages and are very techno-savvy. Are you a baby boomer who loves technology? Think how life has changed in the past 10 years. You’ll know you’re living in 2009 when:

1. You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave.

2. You haven’t played solitaire with real cards in years.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of
three.

4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you - or your spouse who is in another part of the house!

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don’t have e-mail addresses.

6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.

7.  You use your cell phone to call your spouse who is in another aisle at Costco.

8. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.

10. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn’t even have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

11. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.

12. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )

13. You’re reading this and nodding and laughing.

14. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

15. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

16. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn’t a #9 on this list.

Lack of Sleep Leads to Dangerous Driving

Posted by JE Jones on May-14-2009

Lack of Sleep Poses Dangerous Threat While Driving

Not only does lack of sleep lead to obesity, lowered immune system and loss of mental focus, a new study shows that lack of sleep also leads to dangerous driving. The National Sleep Foundation’s 2009 “Sleep in America” survey found that more than half of all adult drivers confessed to driving while drowsy in the past year - this could include up to 110 million drivers! Not only that, but one third of drivers may even have fallen asleep at the wheel!

Police reports back up this dangerous driving due to lack of sleep. One hundred thousand police reported auto crashes annually are the direct result of driver’s being drowsy or falling asleep at the wheel.

The study also found that in the past 8 years, the number of people who said they actually got a full 8 hours of sleep per night dropped from 38% to 28%. Many studies find that the optimum amount of sleep is between 7 and 8 hours per night.

Lack of sleep seems to be a plague on many Americans, including baby boomers. Stress, financial worries, sleep apnea, lack of exercise - all these lead to sleep problems.

Before you resort to sleep medications, which have some serious side effects, try these natural sleep remedies:

1.  Set your bedtime at the same time each night. Try a bedtime routine of relaxing before bed instead of watching TV. Do some stretches to loosen and relax your body. If you read, make it something uplifting and soothing - not a murder mystery!

2.  Take a warm (not hot) bath with some lavender oil. Lavender has been shown in some studies to be as effective a sleep remedy as an over the counter sleep aid. Put some lavender potpouri next to your bed.

3.  Make a to-do list in the evening, well before bedtime. Many people lay awake thinking of all they have to do the next day and once it’s on the to-do list, it can be forgotten.

4.  Get some exercise during the day to both tire you out and relax you. Even if you just take two 15 minutes walks a day, it can help.

5.  Avoid alcohol in the evening. Alcohol is actually a stimulent and although it may help you fall asleep initially, you will wake up an hour later, wide awake.

6.  Try some Nature’s Inventory Wellness Oil Sleep aid - This is a safe, natural remedy for getting a good night’s sleep. Just put a little on your neck and shoulders and sleep like a baby. I’ve been using this sleep

remedy for about 3 years and I feel it really helps me get a good night’s sleep.

Nature’s Inventory Sleep Aid is certified organic and contains no
synthetic ingredients. It has no side effects and is not habit forming.

7.  Try meditation and deep breathing to relax you. Here’s a simple deep breathing exercise. Lay flat in bed, breathe in slowly and deeply but expand into your belly, not your chest. Breathe in  to the count of 4 and breathe out to the count of 6. Focus only on your breathing. You can feel the relaxation.

Getting enough sleep is as important to overall health as exercise and eating the right food. Don’t be one of the traffic statistics due to lack of sleep.

Bewitched (1969) on Hulu

One of my all time favorite “old” TV shows. I love Samantha, Darrin and the Bewitched crew. Bewitched is an American situation comedy originally broadcast for eight seasons on ABC from 1964 to 1972. The show stars Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York (1964-1969), Dick Sargent (1969-1972) and Agnes Moorehead.

After Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff are rescued from a hanging by mysterious strangers, the countryside if terrorized by three men, posing as Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff. Sheriff Masters puts Billy and his pals.

Star Trek has been in the news lately with the release of the newest Star Trek movie. Watch old episodes of this great science fiction classic, which aired from 1966-1969.

Stage Fright (1950)

Jane Wyman was always one of my favorites. In this movie from 1950, she plays Eve Gill, an aspiring young actress, who shelters a fellow acting student, Jonathan Cooper (Richard Todd), from the police. He is suspected of murdering the husband of his mistress.
