Joan’s Boomer Blog - Sale of Nostalgic Candy Up in Hard Times
Sale of Nostalgic Candy Soars Despite Recession
Despite the current recession, which finds many companies are failing, the Hershey Company saw a 45% increase in sales in 2008, while the Nestle Company’s profits soared 68% in the same time period. Candy stores are also seeing a booming business.
Why? When people are faced with bad news all around, a little sugar treat can go a long way to making them feel better and if they are reaching for a piece of their childhood, when times seemed simpler and happier by comparison, so much the better. Nostalgic foods are making a big come back as baby boomers hit the candy stores.
Did you know that it was during the Great Depression that candy companies began creating treats like Snickers bars and Tootsie Rolls? Not much has changed in the human psyche. People still turn to familiar comfort foods during stressful times and nostalgic candy is a relatively inexpensive indulgence, no matter what your budget.
In recent years, most of us have been inundated with the horrors of over-indulging in sugar but I say, if a Necco Chocolate Candy Wafer makes you feel better about life, go for it!
